Nine clients, and that is the maximum
Nine is the number at which I can still remember how everybody likes things done.
I do not subcontract and I do not run a team. When you write, I am the person who reads it, and after a couple of months you stop having to explain the context.
Retainers are monthly with no minimum term. If a month is quiet, unused hours roll over once rather than evaporating.
I will tell you when something is not worth paying me for. Several clients have ended up with a cheaper piece of software and a smaller retainer, which is a good outcome.

After two months I stopped explaining anything. That is the whole product.
★★★★★
She told me a cheap piece of software would replace four of my hours a month. It did, and my retainer went down.
★★★★★
The invoice chasing alone pays for the retainer twice over.
★★★★★
Only works weekdays, which is fair and occasionally inconvenient.
